LGBTQ+

LGBTQIA2S+ is an acronym for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, Two-Spirit and additional sexual orientations and gender identities including non-binary. Resources included on this page provide informational starting points for all library users, including youth, allies and parents. Not a comprehensive list.

Manitoba Resources

  • Anakhnu: Jewish LGBTQ2S+ group - A group for Jewish LGBTQ2S+ individuals, family members and friends to socialize, share information and ideas. Offered in association with Rady Jewish Community Centre.
  • BIPOC Mental Health Workers List - Born out of a conversation between Tamika Krush and Chance Dupuis in December 2019, this open-source list features mental health workers of different races, ethnicities, and mental health professions. The list is updated on the first of every month, and is hosted through Nine Circles
  • Collectif LGBTQ* du Manitoba - "Le Collectif est un regroupement sans but lucratif ayant pour projet principal la réalisation d’une analyse des besoins telle que mandatée par l’assemblée fondatrice du 23 janvier 2019. Le Collectif est géré entièrement par des bénévoles." / The Collective is a non-profit group mandated to carry out a needs analysis report for the French-speaking 2SLGBTQ+ communities in Manitoba. You can find their Phase 1 report on their webpage.
  • Dream Catchers - Weekly support group for women and transgender individuals transitioning from the sex trade, providing a safe and supportive place to start their healing journey.
  • Klinic Community Health Centre - Offers primary health care, mental health care and community health services to enhance individual and community capacity. Specific programming offered to the LGBTQ2S+ community.
  • Like That - Sunshine House - Like That provides a space where people exploring gender and/or sexual identity can gather for fun, skills building and recreation. Sunshine House is a drop-in centre focusing on harm reduction, health promotion and social inclusion.
  • Our Own Health Centre - Our Own Health Centre expanded from the former Gay Men's Health Clinic, and now offers care to the entire 2SLGBTQ+ community. Services include general medical and sexual healthcare, mental health counselling, diabetes care, smoking cessation support, and financial counselling.
  • Rainbow Resource Centre - Provides support, education and resources to foster a proud, resilient and diverse LGBT2SQ+ community.
  • Sexuality Education Resource Centre (SERC) - Offers supportive programming for LGBTQ2S+ individuals, families and friends in Western Manitoba.
  • Trans Manitoba - A volunteer, non-profit, independent group whose goal is to represent all of Manitoba's trans and gender fluid folks.
  • Trans Support Groups - Rainbow Resource Centre - Rainbow Resource runs several groups for trans and non-binary people.

Youth Organizations

  • The Get Real Movement - Get REAL MB is a local branch of the national non-profit organization, The Get REAL Movement. Our goal is to support 2SLGBTQ+ youth across the country by providing After-School Programs and in-school presentations. The After-School Program is geared towards youth ages 13-17, occurs once a month, and is free for students. Guest speakers, workshops, field trips, and mentorship is included in this program.   • In Their Own Words - explores of non-binary gender identity created by non-binary teens and young adults.
  • My GSA in Manitoba schools - Manitoba Education in collaboration with EGALE Canada developed and published Safe and Caring Schools – A Resource for Equity and Inclusion in Manitoba Schools (MB MYGSA). This document is a valuable tool for educators, students, and parents in working together to create more equitable and inclusive schools, especially with respect to diversity of sexuality and gender identity and expression.
  • Native Youth Sexual Health Network - An organization by and for Indigenous youth that works across issues of sexual and reproductive health, rights and justice throughout the United States and Canada.
  • Rainbow Resource Centre Youth programs - RRC has a number of programs for youth including Peer Project for Youth - a popular drop in program for LGBTTQ+ youth ages 13-21.
  • Teen Talk - Teen Talk is a Youth Health Education Program. We provide services for youth from a harm reduction, prevention education perspective with a focus on sexuality, reproductive health, body image, substance use awareness, mental health, issues of diversity and anti-violence issues.
  • UNYA - Two-Spirit Collective - provides support, resources, and programming for Indigenous youth, ages 15 to 30, who identify as 2-spirit or LGBTQ+.

Two-Spirit Resources

  • Two-Spirited People of Manitoba - Improve the quality of life of Two-Spirit (Aboriginal gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans) people in Manitoba, which includes raising funds for and assisting in providing appropriate advocacy, education, health services, housing, employment training and cultural development.
  • Two-Spirited People of Manitoba Oral Histories - This oral history project was developed in collaboration by Two-Spirited People of Manitoba Inc, the University of Winnipeg Archives, the Oral History Centre at the University of Winnipeg, and supported in part by the federal and provincial governments. it is the first phase of what will be a "continuing effort to preserve and provide access to the voices and history of Two-Spirit people across Turtle Island."
  • Manitoba Archival Information Network - Two-Spirited Collection - Two-Spirited collection at the University of Winnipeg Archives including photographs, books, posters, videos and textiles.
  • Two-Spirit Michif Local - The Two-Spirit Michif Local is a Manitoba Metis Federation local in the Winnipeg region that serves Métis citizens who identify as two-spirit (2S), lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, and/or non-binary.
  • Native Youth Sexual Health Network - An organization by and for Indigenous youth that works across issues of sexual and reproductive health, rights and justice throughout the United States and Canada.
  • Two Spirits, One Voice - Egale - an initiative that seeks to bolster support from the general public for persons that identify both as LGBTQI and Indigenous –Two Spirit people.

Words Have Meaning
